Place your business logo on the sign, near the top of the sign. Depending on how big your sign is, the logo should appear in proportion to the sign, but not take up more space than necessary. The top left corner, or just next to where you want your business name are ideal locations for your logo.
Use large, legible lettering to display the name of your business. Choose a font that is easily readable, and not too flashy. Flashy fonts do not appear professional, and can be hard to read as well. Stick with a normal style that doesn’t jump off of the page, and distort the sign. A good place to position the business name is a quarter of the way down from the top, or a quarter up from the bottom.
Place a picture of you or your business associates on the sign, near the top. This is a good idea as it gives potential customers an image of you or your associates. You can think of your business sign as the first impression, so an image of you or your business team would be a good addition to the sign.
Describe the type of service that you’re offering in a short sentence, just underneath your business name. Use smaller lettering, but large enough to read. Keep the message short, sweet and professional. An example of this would be: Jane Doe and Associates, Computer Sales Specialists.
Add color but don’t make the sign too colorful as this will distract a person from the sign’s intended purpose. Choose a calm color as a border, or bright reds or yellows to add emphasis to a promotional special, or any part of the sign to which you want to draw the most attention.
You can design your business sign on your computer using graphic design programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Freehand, CorelDRAW and many others. Some websites also offer online graphics software that you can use to create the sign, and then you can send your idea to a print shop or sign shop to have the sign made.
